Why your season isn't the season

Most advice fails for a quiet reason: it assumes everyone is in the same situation, sailing toward the same place. They aren't.

You can do exactly the right thing at exactly the wrong time and watch it fail. You can do the thing that worked perfectly for someone else and watch it fail for you. Not because the advice was bad — because it didn't account for where you actually are.

Seasonal intelligence is the correction. It doesn't hand you a to-do list. It teaches you to read your real position, so you can sail your own line instead of someone else's.

There are three things to read at once.

Miss one and the picture is wrong. Together, they tell you which work is actually yours right now.

Your constitution is the manual for you: your strengths, your weaknesses, your disposition, and where you're actually trying to go. It's the most fixed of the three — it doesn't change with the month. A fire constitution runs hot in January the same as July; that's not a mood, it's the sailor you are. Your constitution decides which seasons' work applies to you all the time, regardless of the calendar.

Your business — the boatits current phase

Your business has its own season, and it's usually not the calendar's. A young company can be deep in its wood phase — aiming, building, finding its shape — while an established one is in metal, cutting and refining what it already has. The boat you're sitting in handles differently depending on its phase, and it asks for different work than the wind alone would suggest.

The calendar season is the wind — the one thing that's the same for all of us. It blows the same direction whether you're paying attention or not. In spring the whole collective leans toward aiming; in summer, toward action. You can sail with it or against it, but you can't change which way it's blowing. It's the only one of the three that isn't yours alone.

You read all three together.

That's the whole skill — and it's why two people in the same month are often doing different work, correctly.

Now you're holding all three — wood, fire, and water — and the right line is a blend none of them would give alone.

The wind blows the same for all of us. But we're in different boats, with different strengths, headed to different places — so copying each other would be silly.
